A documentary about
the Apollo moon project and the experimental X-planes
illustrates a point about Herr Singer. He has always been
at the forefront of technology and was extensively
educated in aerodynamics, originally, in fact, training to
be a rocket scientist. Near the end, after the documentary interviewed numerous test pilots and enacted their glamorous stories with great drama, the documentary's commentator then asked a NASA engineer if one of the courageous pilots made "a great quarterback" for the test team. The engineer thought for a while and said "Well, the test pilots are not the quarterback, they're the football." As much as we appreciate the talented Porsche drivers whose amazing skills piloted Porsches to victory, this Club is about the Quarterback. Spontaneous Comments from Club Members, at this link Singer Fan Activities
and News... So what's he doing these
days? 2015 to the Present... He's been working on The
Ultimate Porsche! with Singer (no relation, really?) Automotive Design (http://singervehicledesign.com/) 2015 was a bittersweet
milestone. Porsche won LeMans yet again in 2015, an
astounding 17 overall victories, & they deserve the credit.
But they did it this time, somehow, without Herr Singer,
who had been involved in every single prior overall
LeMans win by Porsche. He was at LeMans this year, but
his work with ACO has slowed down. He may attend
next year, so if you can spot him, please
go up to him, introduce yourself, & let him
know you're in the Club, as well as how much we
all appreciate his genius. Bring your copy of 24:16
for him to sign.
Meanwhile, he continues to
lecture at the University of Applied Sciences at
Esslingen. He's got a lot of students, hopefully
none of them end up racing opposite your team.
2014 & 2015 Herr Singer is doing
lectures, with more & more students. And he does
analysis for ACO for WEC races. Meanwhile, another
interesting Singer article appeared in 911 & Porsche World
magazine, the best source for interesting, deep &
historic Porsche stories. This article traced
development of the Martini RSRs, which benefited greatly
from Herr Norbert Singer's out-of-the-box creativity.
And to get more webtraffic, please note that one of the
photos below includes some nudity. 2013
Herr Singer is still a consultant for ACO and does
analysis from the WEC and sometimes ALMS races. He
will be at Spa in early May and of course at the
LeMans 24 hour race.
From fan club
member Bourquardez, news of a Singer Figurine!
(left)He is making a presentation about Porsche and LeMans in St. Pölten, Austria. He also conducts special tours through the Porsche Museum, telling special, personal stories, about the cars there. This is material above and beyond what you get from the official tour guides there, which is already quite good, and this comes directly from Singer, the man himself. This author has enjoyed a personal tour by Herr Singer of his Porsche race car creations, and has enjoyed Singer's presentations on other occasions. It is hard to describe just how fantastic it is to hear his personal stories of his thinking, engineering and leadership behind these world-conquering race cars, the teams, and the associated players and personalities. He is also a really nice guy that loves to answer your questions. Imagine the wonderful stories, such as you can read about in his book 24:16, as they come alive to you directly in person, unfiltered and unedited, by the man himself that made it all happen. You really ought to buy 24:16 and take it to one of his tours at the Porsche Museum for the time of your life. You could ask him, for example, "Why can't I remove the rain channels on my 911 to lower aerodynamic drag?" (hint: see page 60 of 24:16) His description of overcoming the amazing engineering challenges behind the braking system for a Le Mans-winning car is by itself worth the trip. Close-Up of the Figurine here. 2012 Although the specifics are,
as always, covered in secrecy, racing fans the world
over can take comfort in knowing that he's still
involved in racing. Now that Porsche may be competing at
LeMans for 2013, could he be involved? Good luck getting
anything official on that, but it would be hard to see
how Porsche could not ask Herr Singer to help. 2009 Herr
Singer was the Tech Presenter and Dinner Speaker at
the Zone 1 Tech Tactics event, held
at Farnbacher Loles shop in Danbury Ct 28 February
2009. This
is already a fantastic event. I understand it to be
the largest and most respected, with some of the
best Porsche speakers world-wide. Consistent with
that reputation, this year they're featuring Herr
Singer. You can hear his address twice. He'll sign
your copy of his book 24:16
They'll also have Singer Fan Club buttons (wear it
to races and get pit access! OK, maybe not. But it's
cool and shows you know The Man), you can take part
in the "Norbert Singer Mass Fan Club Induction," and
even learn the secret handshake! 2008 Herr Singer addressed a
packed room, one otherwise large enough to hold a formal
ballroom dance, and that with room leftover for
some Can-Am cars, all enjoying his first-hand accounts
of developing Porsche's world-beating race cars. A warm,
informal address, quite informative, and punctuated with
genuine humor. You need to catch one of his
presentations, even if you don't care about race car
development, per se.
It is a fascinating view of a brilliant and creative
mind, ahead of its peers, much as they say it was like
to listen to Beethovan discuss his thoughts at the town
square. He's
also consulting for race teams and teaching, such as
the "Technische Hochschule" at Esslingen,
which also has a race team.
Fortunately
for all of us, you'll frequently catch him at the
more significant races worldwide. Be sure to tell
him you're a Member. Even better, get his book and
bring it with you for him to sign. 2006 Just in time for LeMans,
The Singer Book is Out! The official announcement
is a little too subdued, like Singer himself. But Herr
Singer is also known, and appreciated, for telling the
whole story, without corporate embellishments which can
make the official news so bland. It should be a great
book! They're expecting a sellout. Get one now. Herr Singer has retired
from Porsche, but is still quite active supporting
Porsche RSR customers. Recently he was testing at P.
Ricard France, and Misano Italy. Then it was Istanbul
for the LeMans European Series. Fan Club member Denis Bourquardez sends us this shot above of Singer at Paul Ricard. He's helping with Porsche's RS Spyder, campaigned by Roger Penske in the American LeMans Series. 2005
Christophorous' excellent
article
about Herr Singer's retirement includes his comments
about his favorite Porsches.here(pdf)
The Porsche Carrera GT - very much an "appearance" by Norbert Singer as we suspected all along. Herr Singer at one of Trackschedule's Test Days Daytona Rennsport Reunion (and other appearances) 2004 Photos here of Norbert
Singer's visit - he was a concours judge for 956s and
962s, etc. How intimidating is that? FIA Endurance Interview 2003 Michael Cotton's interview here LeMans 2003 The ACO awarded Herr Singer its "Spirit of LeMans", placing him with Derek Bell, Paul Frere and Dr. Piech. click on photo for more, and details Porsche says
Singer is working on the Cayenne windshield wipers - a
new plan to win LeMan from the "Car Parts Class"? Or,
something bigger, like a Moby Dick Cayenne!?!....-> Champion Racing and the Norbert Singer Fan Club Champion's Naveen Maraj applies a club sticker to the
nose of the Champion Porsche on the grid of the
Daytona Rolex 24. This and several pages of
photos of the car are at this link.
